National Ice Cream Day

Did you hear the scoop? It’s National Ice Cream Day!

The US has celebrated a National Ice Cream Day for 34 years since Reagan set it up in 1984. My favourite ice cream is either Häagen-Dazs Cookies and Cream or Ben & Jerry’s Peanut Butter Cup. To celebrate I decided to carve an ice cream scoop.

As a carver of wooden spoons, ice cream is the friend who often lets you down. You still like them, but you gotta be careful about what you trust them with. A well frozen tub of gelato can be a spoon killer.

With that in mind, ice cream scoops tend to be chunky affairs. A little online research suggested that the Zeroll scoops come highly recommended. I used that basic shape as inspiration for my design. No ‘unique heat conductive fluid’ in my spoons though.

The neck of the scoop is 2cm² which should be plenty thick. The front edge is lower than the back to try and get that rolling scoop going from the ice cream. It also leaves the grain at the front of the spoon straight, which should lend it a little more strength.

I wanted to do a little stress test. I think a 50lb (22.6kg) kettlebell should suffice as a stand-in for the most frozen of frozen yoghurt.

If you want to watch the making process, here you go.

I’ve got a handy half dozen scoops ready to ship out immediately. They’re all carved from black cherry and sealed with linseed oil. Once those are gone you can still order a scoop but it’ll be made to order, so there will be a slightly longer wait before that serving of dessert 🍨
